A House for Us Meg, December 6, 2024December 6, 2024 I am sitting on pins and needles as I write this. We may have found our house! It feels almost surreal. We’ve been on the search for the right home for such a long time, I can hardly believe it may actually be happening. It’s been many months of actively looking and years of dreaming, and this is the closest we’ve come yet. All of our fingers are crossed! When we moved into our current place, a little (and literal) hole in the wall, it was meant to be a short term solution. At the time, it was just Marty and I and the small cozy space was perfect for us. We never imagined we’d stay so long. Just like we never imagined that the cost of everything would sky rocket and the housing market would become a battlefield.I’m so grateful for the little hole in the wall that has kept us safe, warm, and dry. I’m grateful that Marty and his dad have been able to make our tiny place into a comfortable home for us. Having a husband and father-in-law in construction is a blessing. If it wasn’t for them, we couldn’t even begin to consider a house like this. This house is a major project! It needs a TON of work; the roof is in need of repair, the front door is falling off the hinges, the flooring is buckling, the wall paper is barely hanging on, the stairs are sketchy, the handrailing is broken, and the bathroom faucet fell right off in Marty’s hand when he touched it. The list of needed repairs goes on and on.We were told that squatters had moved in while the house sat empty and to say they made a mess of the place would be an understatement. Maggie even found droppings from the last “tenants” in one of the upstairs bedrooms! This house is in need of some TLC…and deep cleaning!Though my best friend and realtor, Vonda, warned us that it needed work, it is admittedly in worse condition than we expected. Just the thought of all that needs to be done is overwhelming. However, our family is growing. It isn’t just the two of us anymore. Our family has expanded with our four year old daughter, Maggie, and our newborn son, Milo. We need more space. I have always dreamt of a big house with enough room for everyone. I’ve been manifesting a home where the kids have their own bedrooms and we all have the space to do the things we love. I’ve been envisioning a home with space for my creative projects, a spot where Marty can read and work on his Zettlekasten, a home with plenty of room for the kids to play, and somewhere for us to gather together with our families and friends. I have a big vision of a big house! But, on a small budget. And that has been the challenge. We knew that to find an affordable house that would meet our needs, it was going to be a fixer-upper. We knew that we’d have to put in some sweat equity and that kind of house is exactly what we’ve found. We feel up for the adventure. We have the vision for this house and we believe we can turn it into our dream home. Now, we just wait to see if they’ll accept our offer. So, keep your fingers crossed with us and check back here again soon. I’ll be keeping you posted on our progress! Uncategorized
